10 Fun Gifts for Writers – i.e., YOU

Okay, so it’s supposed to be the season of giving... to other people. But I’m sure I’m not the only one who isn’t averse to buying a little something for myself, especially if it’s not something other people are likely to buy for me (due to expense, impracticality, or “But I always get you X!”)
Below are some of my favorite things. Hopefully they’ll spark some ideas of your own:
Japanese pens – Nobody does pens and stationery like the Japanese, and I dare you to visit the Komorebi page and not drool over their offerings. Although my favorites are at the Kawaii Pen Shop. Kawaii is Japanese for “cute” and these pens are crazy cute and fun.
Journals/notebooks – I love Peter Pauper Press. In addition to gorgeous journals, they have Masterpiece Library Editions of literary classics like Pride and Prejudice, Walden, and many others. Also stationery, notecards, planners...
Chocolate/favorite snacks – Go wild here. My favorite chocolate is from Läderach but there are plenty of other options. Stock up on any other favorite snacks. I took a trip to Trader Joe’s and got some peanut butter pretzels and peppermint Jo-Jos to get me through the cold winter months.
Coffee/tea/cocoa – While you’re at it, stock up on your favorite brands of drinks as well. Or pick something you’d like to try, like this Atlas Coffee Club World of Coffee Discovery Set Or this Tea Forte Warming Joy Holiday Assorted Gift Chest. Or this Gourmet Hot Cocoa Variety Pack. Maybe buy a fun mug to go with. And don’t forget the marshmallows for hot cocoa!
Mystery Date with a Book – Lots of bookshops offer this now, often throwing in fun stickers, pens, bookmarks, a sachet of tea, or other items. Take the plunge and see what you get!
Book(s) from TBR list – Pick some fun options from your endless To Be Read List and treat yourself to something you’ve been looking forward to reading.
Loungewear– When I write, I like to feel comfortable. Bookish not only has cozy sweatshirts, they also have slippers, throws, bags, hats, and a ton of other “bookish” items.
Mug or container for pens/pencils – My writing implements tend to get scattered around my livingroom, bedroom, office... and I can never find the one I’m looking for. Buy yourself a fun (large) mug or two to corral them all. Just look up “fun mugs” on Amazon or Etsy or go to a craft fair and pick up some pottery.
Laptop stand or lap desk – If, like me, you spend a stupid amount of time on your laptop, this curved laptop stand could be a lifesaver. If you don’t have a lap desk, take a look at this one or this one.
Blue light blocking reading light – Like this fun one. That way you can read in bed without it keeping you awake all night.
These are just a few items that make the writing life a lot more fun. And we, as serious writers, need to make sure we’re indulging our fun, creative sides too! With that in mind, let yourself indulge in a fun holiday gift this year (and you know, maybe buy one for another writer in your life).
